Tongkat ali, or longjack, is a herbal supplement that comes from the roots of the green shrub tree Eurycoma longifolia, which is native to Southeast Asia.
For centuries, people have used Tongkat Ali for its purported testosterone, strength, and energy benefits. In fact, several studies have noted testosterone-promoting effects from people taking a Tongkat Ali supplement.

Tongkat Ali’s potential to increase testosterone in men with low levels of this primary sex hormone is well known and well-documented.
It is also thought that Tongkat Ali reduces your metabolism of free testosterone. This essentially increases the life span of your free testosterone in your body, essentially increasing the efficiency of your existing testosterone.
There are at least 300+ research studies on Tongkat Ali and its effect on testosterone, estrogen and other hormones in the last 20 years. Here are some of the key findings
- Multiple testosterone-related studies on Tongkat Ali between 2000-2021 showed an increase in total testosterone and free testosterone between 5%, 16.9%, 30%, 61.2%, 122%, 588% and 600% (depending on study length and dose)
- Tongkat Ali showed the greatest testosterone improvement of up to 600% in free test levels after 24 weeks when consumed 400mg per day with multivitamins.
- Research studies on Tongkat Ali did not show any evidence of increasing dihydrotestosterone (DHT), or an increase in prostate risks for men.
- Most Tongkat Ali studies on testosterone showed significant improvement between 2 weeks to 24 weeks.
A recent study by Chan et al in 2021 with 32 males with an average age of 24 years showed that 600mg daily consumption of Tongkat Ali over a two-week period resulted in 15% higher levels of testosterone and 34% increase in free testosterone. The level of estrogen (estradiol) was reported to increase by 30% too.
We found two independent clinical studies conducted in 2021 and 2014 showing that Tongkat Ali increased testosterone in senior men and women above 50 years.
The first study involved a group of 105 male between 50 to 70 years of age with a placebo-controlled group with results showing significant improvement in testosterone.
A second study with 13 males and 12 females between 57 to 72 years over a 5-week period showed improvement in testosterone between 61% for males, and 122% for females when subjected to 400mg of Tongkat Ali daily.
A 1-month study in 76 older men with low testosterone found that taking 200 mg of tongkat ali extract per day significantly increased levels of this hormone to normal values in over 90% of participants
Body Composition
A small, 5-week study in 14 men participating in a strength training program found that those who took 100 mg of Tongkat Ali extract per day experienced significantly greater increases in lean body mass than those taking a placebo (cite)
They also lost more fat than participants in the placebo group.
What’s more, a 5-week study in 25 active older adults discovered that supplementing with 400 mg of Tongkat Ali extract daily significantly increased muscular strength, compared to a placebo (cite)
Male Fertility & ED
One study in 75 male partners of couples with infertility found that taking 200 mg of tongkat ali extract per day significantly improved sperm concentration and motility after 3 months. The treatment helped over 14% of couples become pregnant (cite)
Similarly, a 12-week study in 108 men ages 30–55 observed that taking 300 mg of tongkat ali extract daily increased sperm volume and motility by an average of 18% and 44%, respectively (cite)
There are four studies in both animals and humans that show that taking Tongkat Ali stimulates sexual arousal and may improve ED in men (1, 2, 3, 4)
A 6-month study by researchers from the University of Santa Catarina Brazil in 2021 showed that daily consumption of Tongkat Ali with a 60-minute exercise 3 times a week brings the most improvement in ED, sexual satisfaction and desire.
Medical specialists Dr. Rena Malik, a urologist from the University of Maryland Medical Center in the United States, reaffirmed that Tongkat Ali may improve ED based on scientific research publications.

Here are some tips on how to increase testosterone levels.
Get good sleep quality. Getting a full, undisturbed night of sleep is essential to support your body to regulate hormone levels. Experts recommend that adults get 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night. You should wake from a night of sleep feeling refreshed. If you don't wake refreshed, you may not be getting enough.
Optimise your exercise. Any exercise can boost testosterone levels in the short-term. But building your muscle mass through strength and resistance training is most effective at permanently increasing testosterone levels. But make sure you do not overdo it; excessive exercise without time to rest and recover can decrease your testosterone levels.

Get sunlight. Vitamin D is essential for testosterone levels. You can produce vitamin D in your skin under exposure to sunlight. In winter, the sunlight in the UK is poor, so you should consider taking a supplement.
Manage your body fat levels. Excessive body fat is associated with decreased testosterone levels in men. You can manage your body fat levels by eating healthily and exercising regularly.
